Aghaat (anguish) is the story of Madhav Varma (Om Puri), a trade union leader. Rapid industrialization has seen unions proliferating and not all of them are for the benefit of the workers. Politics, money power and muscle power are also involved. Madhav, a former lecturer in English, heads the labour union at Shivalik Engineering Industries, which is facing an onslaught from a rival union led by Rustom Patel (Naseeruddin Shah). The simmering tensions boil over at a clash, leaving five workers dead. Madhav is shaken to the core of his being and beliefs. He is not sure about anything now, his ideology, his commitment or his actions. Some answers have to be waited for. Some can be found in action. But for one who is in doubt, the anguish is never ending.Based on a story by Vijay Tendulkar, eminent Marathi play writer.
