Ok, the Gore thing

As you may or may not have heard, today Al Gore spoke on the need for new power sources. I don't claim to be an expert on things like the earth, energy and global warming myself, so I tend to trust people who are on those issues. But, of course, only if they've won the Nobel Prize.

What luck!

Excerpts:

Although Mr. Gore has made global warming and energy conservation his signature issues, winning a Nobel Prize for his efforts, his speech on Thursday argued that the reasons for renouncing fossil fuels go far beyond concern for the climate.

In it, he cited military-intelligence studies warning of “dangerous national security implications” tied to climate change, including the possibility of “hundreds of millions of climate refugees” causing instability around the world, and said the United States is dangerously vulnerable because of its reliance on foreign oil.

This is the kind of thing that actually fires up my hope a bit. Reminds me that however wary I may become of Obama "drifting" to the center...he's the only right choice. Is John McCain going to make Al Gore one of his closest advisors on those subjects? Somehow, I think not.

One more paragraph in that article that needs must be responded to, as a side note:

By calling for new political leadership and speaking disdainfully of “defenders of the status quo,” Mr. Gore was hurling a dart at the man who defeated him for the presidency in 2000, George W. Bush.

That's not exactly how it happened, and we shouldn't forget that. No matter how many people would like us to "get over it," specific people (many of those same people who now want us to "get over it) made specific choices.

Choices that have cost us the lives of thousands, our place as a world leader and...stop me before I go into the full list. But if those specific people--the deciders, if you will--now think they made a mistake, then bully for them, but only if they can admit it. An apology would be nice, too.

But it should never be allowed to go down in any history that it was as simple as Bush "defeating" Gore.
