Tradition

The last episode of the first season of Sports Night was named "What Kind of Day Has It Been."

The last episode of the first season of West Wing was also named "What Kind of Day Has It Been." Aaron Sorkin indulged in a little self-reflexive tribute in his script for the penultimate West Wing episode he wrote, "Commencement," when he had John Spencer as Leo ask the same question.

So you'll understand that, as an old Sorkin hand, I am gratified to see that the last episode of the first (and final) season of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip has indeed been named...

It's set to air this Thursday, and I guess it'll mostly just be me and the rest of the loyal fan base who'll be watching. For any of those who may be looking in, here's a good item on the series, with comments by Stephen Weber, who starred as network chairman Jack Rudolph. Given my recent analysis of the final few episodes, you'll understand that I also take some pleasure from his remark:

"Studio 60 [is] one of the most over- analysed shows in the history of American network television. I liken the development of this show to someone having a baby and then everyone standing around and shouting `C'mon, grow! Grow, you bastard! Be strong! Be wise!'

Last look at the child comes this Thursday at 10.
