Theron was born in Benoni, Transvaal Province, South Africa, the only child of Gerda Jacoba Aletta (née Maritz; born 27 January 1953) and Charles Jacobus Theron (11/27/1947—6/21/1991). Her mother is of German descent and her father was of Occitan and Dutch ancestry; Theron is descended from early Huguenot settlers, and Boer War figure Daniel Theron was her great-grandfather's brother. "Theron" is an Occitan surname (originally spelled Théron) pronounced in Afrikaans as "Tronn", although she has said that the way it is pronounced in South Africa is "Thrown". changed the pronunciation when she moved to the U.S.

Although fluent in English, her first language is Afrikaans.She grew up on her parents' farm in Benoni, near Johannesburg. Her father died on 21 June 1991, after he was shot by Theron's mother. At the age of 16, Theron traveled to Milan, Italy, on a one-year modeling contract, after winning a local competition. She went to New York with Pauline's Model Management. She decided to remain after her contract ended, attending the Joffrey Ballet School, where she trained as a ballet dancer. A knee injury closed this career path when Theron was 19.

Unable to dance, Theron flew to Los Angeles on a one-way ticket her mother bought her.During her early months there, she went to a bank to cash a check her mother had sent her to help with the rent. South African-born actress Charlize Theron auctioned off a kiss for $140,000, (Rs 64, 40,000) and the winning bidder was a woman, US magazine reported Friday.

Theron, 34, took part in a live auction during a gala for the charity OneXOne Thursday in San Francisco. She was initially selling a 2010 trip to South Africa that included World Cup tickets, a safari and a meet-and-greet with Nelson Mandela.

But she raised the stakes after bidding stalled at $37,000, far less than actor Jeremy Piven had just raised.

To sweeten the deal, she offered up a seven-second kiss for $130,000 to a male bidder, but a woman in the audience quickly bettered the deal with a $140,000 bid.

Theron is in a long-term relationship with actor Stuart Townsend, 36.

"My boyfriend is not here tonight," she joked before a smooch that lasted 20 seconds.

Charlize said it was this 'caveman' approach which reminded her of her native country's past apartheid laws, which marked a distinctive line between whites and non-whites. "I don't like living in an elitist world, it bothers me. I don't want to be part of an elitist sexual preference,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“It bothers me, maybe it's because I come from a country where I lived under apartheid but this is a form of apartheid and I don't want to be a part of that. My ability to get married is a piece of me that I wish I could give to somebody who it would mean so much to. We should all have the chance. It's just so caveman, I can't believe we're still talking about it," she added.
